Hei he waa: The History of Canoe Racing

Originally created for fishing and transporting supplies and people across the region’s jagged lava rock and often treacherous waves, the outrigger canoe has become a symbol of Hawaiian culture and respect for the ocean.

「ヘイヘイワア」と呼ばれるアウトリガーカヌーレースは、アロハ州で発明され、1880年代にハワイの酋長たちの間で普及しました。18しかし、伝統的なハワイの生活様式からよりヨーロッパ的な生活様式への移行に伴い、このスポーツはカアフマヌ女王によって一時期禁止されました。

の中に19701960 年代、このスポーツは、故芸術家であり歴史家であり、ポリネシア航海協会の創設者でもあるハーブ・カワイヌイ・ケインが、20 年の間に 6 回もの主要な航海を成し遂げたアウトリガー カヌーのレプリカを製作したことで再び注目を集めました。アウトリガー カヌー レースはアロハの象徴となり、ハワイの公式スポーツとなりました。
