6 Tips for Summer Travel to Thailand

Beaches. Temples. Moonlight festivals. Thailand is one of the most diverse travel destinations in the world. And one of the best times to wander through the “Land of Smiles:” summertime.

We’ve gathered the top tips for traveling to this remote-island-meets-cultural paradise so you can adventure in style all summer long.

    1. Pack lightly

When we say pack lightly, we mean literally. Thailand can be quite humid in the summer, so pack clothes that breathe, like linens or loose clothing that allows for easy layering. And don’t forget the comfy sneakers, as you’ll be walking a lot (consider waterproof shoes or at least non-slip sandals that can handle the rainy season!).

    2. Eat local

    Thailand street food

Thailand is famous for its delicious and diverse cuisine. From Pad Thai and Green Curry to Som Tam, a salad made with shredded green papaya, tomatoes, peanuts and chili peppers, there’s nothing better than the rich, local flavors here. Or, if you're slightly more adventurous, try fried Insects: grasshoppers, crickets, and silkworms all top the list of edible insects here, and can be found at a lot of street vendors.

    3. Be shady

Thailand's summer temps can hover around 95°F/35°C,  perfect for hanging out seaside and lounging in the sand at one of the country's top beaches like Bangsak Beach — but those hot temperatures can also mean you need to bring sun hats and lots of sunscreen.

    4. Respect the local culture

Removing shoes before entering Thailand temple

Thailand is known for its rich and vibrant culture, and it's essential to respect local customs and traditions. Dress modestly and cover your shoulders and knees, especially when visiting temples. Avoid public displays of affection and remove your shoes before entering homes or temples.

    5. Practice smiling

    Land of Smiles Thailand

Thailand gets its moniker "Land of Smiles" from its true variety of smiles (up to 13 of them!) and the beautiful spirit of sharing them. Thai people are known for being able to smile through (almost!) any situation. Try your hand at the Yim thak thaai — known as the “polite” smile, this is great for those you don't know well.

    6. Book (well) in advance

One of the most essential tips for traveling to Thailand is to book in advance. This island locale has great spots like Outrigger’s resorts in Koh Samui, Surin and Khao Lak, but destinations fill up fast. Same goes for activities when you’re in the country, so make sure to plan ahead and book as soon as you’re ready to say "sawadee."
